Brief report: 2023 State Championships for Kids and Students

While the Regio Cup Nord and the Koshinkan Cup — the two dress rehearsals for the KVBW State Championships for children and schoolchildren — were successful, the outcome of the State Championships on 13 May 2023 was mixed.

While Ranjana, Lenox and Luke all reached the final round of the kata competition with confidence, Leon unfortunately missed out by a narrow margin. Ranjana suffered from stage fright in the final and had to deal with her nerves. Nevertheless, she achieved an impressive 5th place in her first national championship. After being among the two best athletes in the preliminary round, Lenox also experienced some stage fright and did not perform the kata quite as powerfully. He finished the competition in sixth place. Luke confirmed his performance at the Koshinkan Cup, finishing the kata competition in an impressive third place.
Luke and Leon also competed in kumite. They achieved a respectable fifth place in their respective age groups. Luke in particular almost caused an upset. Unfortunately, with the score tied at 7–7 in the final fight, he was penalised for senshu and narrowly missed out on third place.

Nevertheless, it was a satisfactory result in the end, particularly as it was the children’s first time participating in a national championship. We congratulate them on their excellent performances and are looking forward to next year.
