Karate

Karate is a traditional Japanese martial art that literally means ’empty hand’. This refers to the fact that it is practised without the use of weapons, instead making use of targeted punches, kicks, blocking techniques and movements. Karate promotes physical fitness and mental discipline.

Shito-ryu is one of the four main styles of modern karate, which was founded in 1934 by Kenwa Mabuni.

Shito-ryu is a style of karate that attempts to unite various roots of karate. To be precise, Shito-ryu is a synthesis of the Okinawan schools Shuri-te and Naha-te.

Kenwa Mabuni is the founder of Shito-ryu Karate-do. He was born on 14 November 1889 in Shuri, Okinawa.

It is very likely that Mabuni came from a well-known Okinawan aristocratic family and that he was the 17th generation descendant of the famous Bushi Ufugusuku Kenyu.

Kobudo is a traditional martial art which literally means ‘ancient martial art’. Its techniques use tools that have been repurposed as weapons, originating from the everyday lives of Okinawan farmers and fishermen.

It was founded by the Japanese karate master Soke Akira Sato. The Japan Karate-Do Dhammika-Ha Shitoryu Kai (JKDS) is a karate organisation dedicated to preserving and passing on the traditional Shito-ryu style.
